What Is Kybella?
Kybella (deoxycholic acid) injections are the first and only FDA-approved treatment option designed to contour and reduce the appearance of submental fullness, or a double chin. The deoxycholic acid included in Kybella is a naturally occurring molecule that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella is made of synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, meaning you should not expect to need further treatment once you reach your desired goals.
What Does Kybella Treat?
Kybella was created to reduce double chin or submental fat appearance. A double chin occurs when the layer of fat around your neck sags and causes a wrinkle. The size of your double chin is often impacted by certain genetic and environmental factors. For example, hormone imbalances that lead to weight gain can combine with natural aging and cause your double chin to become larger and more noticeable. In addition, stubborn fat areas like under the chin simply release fat more slowly than other areas due to density. Double chin fat reduction is nigh impossible through traditional means due to the fat’s troublesome location. Therefore choosing Kybella may be the most effective way of reducing submental fat.
What to Expect During Treatment
Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. The number of treatment sessions you need will be based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Each Kybella treatment session is given at least one month apart, and you should not receive more than six treatments.
Results of Kybella Injections
Following your Kybella treatment, you may experience some mild side effects. These include swelling, bruising, and numbness under the chin. These side effects typically last for about three days. After the side effects subside, you will see an improvement in your profile and skin tightness. Most patients begin to see the effects of Kybella after three treatment sessions, but up to six may be needed for best results.
Is There Any Downtime?
Be aware that bruising and/or redness, as well as swelling from Kybella injections may be present for approximately two weeks to one month. Patients may also experience localized numbness which is a normal and expected reaction that will gradually disappear.
