What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane, and Juvéderm re-volumize and immediately enhance specific areas of your face, reducing smile lines, superficial lines, and plumping lips. Fillers can also be used to contour the cheeks and jawline.
Dermal fillers, in the hands of a practitioner with an artistic eye combined with skill and experience, can sculpt the face and restore a natural, youthful look. Fillers are used to erase wrinkles, plump the lips, add volume to the face and to improve scars from acne, surgery, and trauma. Fillers do not affect muscle motion or facial expression. When fillers are injected properly, they look very natural and undetectable. At Modern Dose, our practitioners begin every dermal filler consultation with a facial structure assessment to determine the best injection process.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Juvéderm, Restylane, Restylane Silk, Perlane are smooth consistency gels made of hyaluronic acid (HA)—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps add volume and hydration. Our clinic applies professional injectable gel under the skin to instantly restore the client’s skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth). HA is a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin that helps skin hold onto water. It is broken down by natural processes and has a positive long-term effect on the skin by coaxing skin cells to produce youthful substances such as collagen and HA. Using HA injections in the skin may help prevent some of the signs of skin aging. HA can be broken down, therefore the results are reversible.
These compounds feature a mixture of lidocaine and natural hyaluronic acid to restore volume while minimizing pain. The added anesthetic included in these fillers works to reduce any discomfort during treatment. Standard procedure times range from 15 minutes to an hour. This estimate includes assessment and injection time. The best part of these dermal fillers is that they can be administered to reflect understated, natural-looking results.
What Do Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dermal fillers are an ideal treatment for those interested in adding facial plumpness, reducing wrinkles, and reversing signs of collagen loss as a whole. Additionally, these powerful dermal fillers can be used to enhance lip fullness, eye hollows, temples, and facial contouring. When injected with care and precision, fillers can deliver long-lasting natural results. The primary results of dermal fillers are:
- Plump lips
- Enhance shallow contours
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Lift and contour cheeks
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
What to Expect During Treatment
Each injection session begins with a comprehensive consultation. A topical anesthetic numbing cream is applied to the skin approximately 20 minutes prior to the procedure. Also, the filler contains lidocaine, another anesthetic making this procedure more comfortable. The injection process itself is typically done in under an hour. While some discomfort is possible during the injection process, most of our patients consider it to be quite tolerable.
Results of Dermal Filler Injections
Results can be seen almost immediately after an injection session.* Dermal fillers can help diminish facial lines and wrinkles and restore volume and fullness in the face and hands. You will notice an increase in skin tightness, plumpness, and radiance. Optimal results following your injection can take effect after a couple of weeks. After dermal fillers, some injection-site redness, swelling, tenderness, discoloration, and itching may occur. However, these side effects often subside after a couple of hours.
How Long Will the Results Last?
Effects of the HA fillers (Restylane family, Juvéderm family) generally last six to nine months.* Some studies have shown evidence that the results last longer than 9-12 months with repeated injections.* Results from Sculptra may last 2-3 years.* Results from Voluma are reported to last up to two years.* Touch-up treatments may be needed sooner. If you lose weight or your skin develops excess sagging (due to smoking, sun exposure or the improper skin care regimen), you may need injections sooner.
Who Cannot Get Dermal Fillers?
You should not get dermal filler injections if you are allergic to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid, are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a herpes blister in the area to be treated, or if you have a disorder that prevents blood from clotting. If you have a social event, we recommend that you get injected two weeks prior.
